Champaign-Urbana itinerary scene

Weekend itinerary

Two nights in Champaign-Urbana: campus art and prairie

Eat in downtown Champaign Friday, cross the University of Illinois arts district Saturday, and use Sunday for the Main Quad or Meadowbrook Park.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A two-night visit can include downtown Champaign, the campus arts district, and Urbana's gardens.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights allow a full campus arts day, a downtown Champaign evening, and one outdoor stop before departure.

Stay

I Hotel & Illinois Conference Center

Downtown Champaign puts dinner and Amtrak nearby; south-campus hotels shorten the trip to the arts and athletic districts; Urbana puts the east side of campus closer.

Main activity

Krannert Art Museum, Krannert Center, and the Arboretum

Saturday links the campus museums and performance halls; Sunday adds either a short Main Quad walk or Meadowbrook Park before departure.

Trip shape

One campus day and one outdoor stop

Keep Saturday between Krannert Art Museum, Spurlock Museum, Krannert Center, and the Arboretum. Save Meadowbrook Park for Sunday unless museum hours leave a clear gap.

Downtown Champaign storefronts and patios in the evening
Friday dinner is easiest around the compact downtown Champaign blocks near Neil, Main, Church, and Walnut streets.
Krannert Art Museum on the University of Illinois campus
Start Saturday at Krannert Art Museum, then continue east toward Spurlock Museum and Krannert Center.
Ponds and plantings near Japan House and the Illinois Arboretum
The broader Arboretum remains accessible during annex construction; follow current fencing around the closed tea-garden area.

Friday

Check in, then walk downtown Champaign for dinner.

A downtown room puts Neil, Main, Church, and Walnut streets outside the hotel, while a south-campus room shortens Saturday's trip to the museums.

Saturday

Cross the campus arts district from galleries to gardens.

Begin at Krannert Art Museum, walk east through the Main Quad area to Spurlock Museum and Krannert Center, then continue south by bus or car to the Arboretum if access and daylight allow.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Start at Krannert Art Museum, then continue east across campus.

See Krannert Art Museum first, cross toward Spurlock Museum, and check the Krannert Center calendar for an afternoon tour or evening performance. Move south to the Arboretum only after confirming current Japan House construction access.

3:30 PM

Afternoon

Continue south to the Arboretum, or stop before dinner.

The Arboretum's ponds and broader grounds remain accessible from the north during annex construction, but the tea-garden area is closed. Follow fencing and posted access instructions.

6:30 PM

Sunday

Cross the Main Quad or walk Meadowbrook before leaving.

Choose the Main Quad when checkout or a train limits the morning. Meadowbrook Park gives a longer prairie-and-sculpture walk on Urbana's south side.

9:00 AM

Sunday morning

Eat at the hotel, then cross the Main Quad.

I Hotel guests can use the included breakfast before checkout. The Main Quad is the simplest short stop afterward; The Space lists Sunday brunch for travelers with a later departure, while Farren's is closed Sunday.
