A Second Star Guide to two cities and one great campus

Champaign-UrbanaIllinois

Walk from the Main Quad to modern art and performance halls, follow the Arboretum paths near Japan House, then cross town for prairie grasses and a downtown Champaign dinner.

Why Champaign-Urbana

Modernist performance halls, global collections, prairie horizons

The University of Illinois gives this prairie city a cultural footprint far larger than its skyline suggests. Krannert Center fills an entire block with terraces and stages; Krannert Art Museum and Spurlock Museum hold global collections; Urbana adds gardens, sculpture, and tallgrass paths; downtown Champaign adds the evening's restaurants and bars.

Choose the weekend

Campus arts, Illini events, and prairie walks make three different Champaign-Urbana trips

Come for the University of Illinois museums and Krannert Center when exhibitions and performances lead the trip. Choose an Illini weekend when the stadium or arena is the fixed event. Choose a quieter spring or fall weekend for Meadowbrook Park, the Arboretum, and long meals in the two downtowns.

Arts weekend

Stay near campus or downtown Champaign

Campus puts the museums and performance halls closer. Downtown Champaign trades the shortest museum trip for the broadest dinner choice and direct access to Amtrak.

Game weekend

Let the event determine the rest of the day

Football fills south campus for hours before kickoff; basketball and concerts create a shorter arena visit. Reserve the hotel first, then add downtown or Campustown meals around the official event time.

Prairie weekend

Give Urbana its own half-day

Meadowbrook Park is separate from the campus museum walk. Pair its prairie and sculpture paths with Urbana, then use downtown Champaign for the second evening rather than crossing town between every stop.

After campus

Downtown Champaign after the galleries close

Brick storefronts, restored theater façades, cocktail bars, coffee counters, and chef-led dining cluster within a few walkable blocks around Neil, Walnut, Main, and Church streets. It is the easiest evening district when the afternoon ends on campus.

Meadowbrook pairs prairie paths with sculpture

At Meadowbrook Park, paved paths cross restored prairie and the Wandell Sculpture Garden. Late-summer grasses and open views make the park distinct from the campus museums and performance halls.
